Where in the United States is same sex marriage legal? Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, District of Columbia, Iowa, and Connecticut are the correct answers. Wisconsin allows for domestic partnership with more than forty of the rights afforded heterosexual married couples.
This is great news for the wedding planner – more happy couples to celebrate their mutual commitment. It also presents a few challenges, which may mean thinking about weddings in a different way. Which name goes first on the wedding invitation? Should the decision be alphabetical or according to age? Which side of the church seats groom one and which side groom two?
Although traditional wedding etiquette hasn’t caught up with same sex marriages, there’s no reason to panic. The most important part of planning any wedding is giving the clients what they want. In all likelihood, they will come with very specific tastes and ideas on how the ceremony should go and where they want to honeymoon.
Wedding etiquette ultimately means that every effort is given to show the happy couple courtesy, respect, and best wishes for the future. Same sex marriages may not yet have specific rules of etiquette, but good manners are always in place no matter what the event.

Planning a wedding for a down to earth couple can be a real joy. It may be their first trip to the altar or one (or both!) of them may have skipped down the aisle multiple times. In either case, they want a simple, meaningful ceremony and prefer to spend the bulk of their budget on the honeymoon rather than cake toppers and ice sculptures.
What suggestions can you make for people on a budget? A honeymoon is a special event and the happy couple deserves to relax and enjoy their trip and each other.
Encourage them to stay in the country or go no further than a neighboring country, especially if they are located close to the border. If they have their hearts set on an island honeymoon, suggest the Florida Keys or Catalina Island. Look into the Golden Isles off the Georgia and Alabama coastline for cozy bed and breakfast inns.
Have they considered registering for their honeymoon with a travel agency? They could request a donation to the honeymoon in lieu of wedding gifts. Neither the giver nor the couple ever has to worry about returning the gift for something they really wanted.
Another bonus is turning one of those honeymoon photographs into a special thank you card. Instead of “wish you were here”, they can send a heartfelt “thank you for sending us.”
